But unpleasant smells around the house can definitely be a problem. And pleasant ones can relax you and put you in a good mood.
Here are a few simple tricks to get rid of the unsavoury smells in your house.
1. The flavour of freshness.
Before you start vacuuming, put a few drops of lavender oil on a piece of cotton wool and let it slip down the vacuum tube. Wherever your vacuum goes, it will live a delicate lavender smell behind. Or of any other favourite flavour: orange oil, pine oil etc.
2. A clean refrigerator
Pour a drop of lavender oil and a drop of lemon oil on a piece of gauze or on a spongy stone. Leave the stone or the gauze in the refrigerator door and don’t forget to renew the smell every once in a while.
3. The garbage bin
Wash the garbage bin and let it dry. Pour a drop of lavender oil and a drop of tea tree oil on a piece of gauze, on a piece of cotton wool or on a spongy stone, and set it on the bottom of the bin.
4. How to freshen up the microwave
Add three drops of mint or lemon oil to a bowl filled with water. Leave it in the microwave for three minutes.
5. Remove bathroom odors
Make room on one of your bathroom shelves for two or three small spongy stones on which you poured a few drops of lavender, ylang-ylang or pine oil. Repeat every week and you will always have a healthy, delicate smell in your bathroom.
6. The bedsheets
We have two suggestions for a nice, natural scent on your bedsheets. One suggestion would be to add seven drops of your favourite essential oil (lavender, mint, rose, eucalypti) to your dryer. The other one would be to add three drops of flavoured oil to the water that you use for ironing.
7. Any type of surface
Add 30 drops of lavender, tea tree or lemon oil to a litre of vinegar. Mix well. With this cheap and simple combination you can clean and disinfect any surface. And it’s a great idea for cleaning ashtrays.
8. Room freshener
Pour a few drops of your favourite oil (mint, orange, cedar, sandalwood) in a water pulveriser. Shake it well and spray the room. Repeat two or three time a week and you will forget all about cigarette or burnt food smell (after properly ventilating the room, of course).
9. How to get rid of cockroaches
Instead of using toxic bug repellents that are harmful to both humans and pets, you can spray around the room and around the corners with a water pulveriser to which you have added lavender, cedar or eucalypti oil. If you don’t have a pulveriser, boil water, add the oil to the hot water and let the scent spread.
